How is Leaded Glass Made?

Our leaded glass is created using premium self-adhesive lead strips from Regalead, a world leading supplier. This high quality lead is applied directly onto the surface of the glass to form classic patterns such as diamonds, rectangles, and bespoke decorative designs. The process involves: 

• Design Selection: Choose from traditional leaded patterns or custom designs. 
• Lead Application: Lead strips are carefully applied to the glass in the chosen design. 
• Patina Development: Over time, natural silver lead oxidises to create an attractive aged finish. 

We stock natural silver lead for a traditional appearance and antique coated lead for an instant aged effect. Lead profiles are available in 6mm, 9mm, and 12mm, with additional options available on request.

Important Considerations for Leaded Glass 

While leaded glass can be applied to most glass types, there are a few key factors to keep in mind: 

• Textured Glass Compatibility: Some highly textured obscure glass patterns do not allow for lead application. We can lead both sides of Contora, Pelerine, Sycamore, Chantilly, and Stipple patterns, while other obscure glasses can only be leaded on the exterior surface. 
• Low E Glass: We cannot apply lead to low-e glass, as the coating may be damaged during the application process. 
• Natural Oxidation: Silver lead will naturally develop a grey patina over time. This ageing process is completely normal and depends on factors such as weather, location, and exposure to moisture.
