Solar control glass offers the perfect balance of light and comfort, helping to manage heat from sunlight without compromising on brightness. It’s an energy efficient solution for modern spaces with extensive glazing.
With large glass areas, keeping your space bright and open is easy, but what about staying cool? That’s where solar glass comes in. Designed to reduce overheating from the sun’s rays, solar glass helps maintain a comfortable indoor temperature while still letting in natural light.
Sunlight streaming through windows can cause a significant rise in indoor temperatures, a phenomenon known as solar gain. This can make rooms uncomfortably warm, especially in south facing spaces, conservatories, and glass roofs. The solution? Solar control glass, which reduces the amount of heat that enters your building while still allowing plenty of light through.
Solar control performance is measured using a g-value: the lower the number, the better the heat blocking ability. For example, a g-value of 0.34 means that only 34% of solar heat is transmitted inside, keeping your space cooler and reducing the need for costly air conditioning.
Tinted Solar Glass
One of the simplest forms of sun control glass, tinted glass contains a dye that absorbs heat and reduces glare. Available in bronze, blue, grey, and green, it’s a great option for reducing solar gain. However, because it absorbs heat, some of it can radiate back into the room. Additionally, colour variations may occur over different production batches, which is something to keep in mind for long term projects.
Coated Solar Control Glass
A more advanced option is solar control glass with special coatings. These coatings reflect solar radiation back outward, preventing heat from entering while still allowing natural light inside. Typically, the coating is applied to the inner surface of the outer pane of a sealed unit. The darker the glass, the lower the g-value, meaning superior sun protection.
A common way to describe coated glass performance is with a ratio such as 61/34, which means 61% light transmission and 34% solar heat gain.
Combined Solar Control & Low-E Glass
For enhanced efficiency, some solar control glass also includes low-e coatings to improve insulation. This means you get both solar protection and energy efficiency in a single pane, helping to keep your space warm in winter and cool in summer.
Hytherm Solar is a ready specified solar sealed unit with a Cool-Lite SKN 176 coating inside the outer pane which achieves an impressive u value of 1.1 and a g value of 0.37. You simply need to tell us your sizes. If you’re looking for something more robust we recommend Hytherm Solar Security. The inner laminate pane makes this unit incredibly tough, whilst still achieving the same u value and g value as it’s standard counterpart.
If you need something completely bespoke, we can manufacture to your exact specification, or work with you to find a combination that works for your project.
